Ho Chi Minh
This French defeat forced the Geneva Conference of 1954, which split Vietnam into Communist-dominated North Vietnam and French-backed South Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh was a symbol of Vietnam’s struggle for unification during a long and costly conflict with the strongly anti-Communist regime in South Vietnam and its powerful ally, the United States. He is primarily remembered for his battle to build an independent and unified Vietnam. Saigon, which is the former capital of South Vietnam, was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in his memory after its capture by North Vietnamese forces in 1975.
